WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN DIRECTED BY THE POLICE TO WRITE A STATEMENT

If the police ask you to write a statement, which they normally do when they stop you on the road and take you to their station or when they invite you to their station, you should know how to write a good statement that will not implicate you.  First, whether you write a statement as a witness or as a suspect, you must understand that your statement is very likely going to be used against you either in court or for the purpose of blackmail by some officers (not all). Therefore, take your statement writing as a serious matter.  Remember that you have right to refuse to write a statement until your lawyer is present. But this normally leads to argument and hostile reactions from the police, and it may likely be a pretext for them not releasing you immediately.  There are no hard and fast rules as to the content of a statement. It is supposed to be what you know in relation to an incident or the reason for you being brought to the station. Since the statement is not just a general view on anything you like, it is important that you know the reason for which you have been brought to the station.  For those who have been suspected of committing an offense, make sure that before you start writing a statement, you ask the officer the offense for which you have been brought to the station. If he tells you that there is no offense, that they just want you to tell them all you know, you can politely say: No, Sir. The police force is meant to enforce the criminal law. Therefore, the police would not have any justification to bring you to the station except if they suspect that an offense has been committed somewhere by somebody – either you or someone else. And you need to know the offense and the person suspected before you could write your statement.  Also, if you were arrested or invited as a result of a petition written against you, you must demand to read carefully that petition before you start giving your statement.  When you start your statement, make sure you explain in your statement the reason for which you have been asked to make your statement. For instance, you can say something like: “I was stopped while driving my vehicle with registration number xxxxx on …

Fayose hails National Assembly over passage of “Not too young to run” bill; wants age barrier removed completely

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has commended the National Assembly for its passage of the bill to reduce the age limits for elective positions, calling for total removal of age barrier from eligibility to contest elections in the country. He said; “If a Nigerian who is 18 years can vote, such a person should also be qualified to be voted for and whether or not such person can be elected should be left in the hands of the electorate. Most importantly, age is not a barrier to intellectual capability and that has been in most countries led by young people. Here in Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon was Head of State at 32.”  The governor, who assured that the Ekiti State House of Assembly will endorse the bill when presented to it, called on other States Houses of Assembly to endorse the bill, saying; “There is no nation that can develop without giving its youths opportunity to serve.” In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Friday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “There is nothing wrong in a 30 year old contesting for President not to even talk of 35 year old because the future of Nigeria belongs to the youths.” The governor also declared that he was already putting into practice provisions of the bill in Ekiti State, explaining that it was in recognition of the importance of youth’s involvement in governance that he restricted the age anyone can contest for councilor to between 18 and 40 years and those above 50 from contesting chairmanship election. “I salute the National Assembly for passing this very important bill that will enable young Nigerians to contest for President at 35, governor at 30 and House of Representative or State Assemblies at 25. But the National Assembly should have removed the age barrier completely,” the governor said. The governor, who reiterated his resolve to enforce age limit for local government positions, said; “This bill passed by the National Assembly has reinforced my position on age limit for local council positions in Ekiti State. “It is my position that our youths must be allowed to participate in governance since they are the ones who provide the largest votes during elections.  “Most importantly, the future belongs to the youths and I believe that they should be giving prominent roles in structuring that future which …

Anambra Monarch chases Nnamdi Kanu from Palace for allegedly committing a Taboo

traditional ruler of Nri community Eze Obidiegwu Onyesoh chased Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanuand his supporters, away from his palace for committing a taboo in Nri culture, a statement credited to his Personal Assistant Ifeanyi Onyesoh, claims. Ifeanyi said that the community will drag him to the customary court to “ensure that nobody else gives such insult to… its heritage”. He made this known while speaking to journalists in Awka on Thursday, adding that the people are angry over Kanu’s alleged misconduct. Onyesoh said Kanu with his wife, Uchechi, and supporters visited the palace of Eze Nri on July 19 and a shrine against the tradition of the people. He noted Nri ancient Kingdom is the cradle of Igbo civilisation, whose culture is revered in the five southeast states of Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra as well as Igbo communities in Delta and Rivers. Onyesoh said on July 18, a day before Kanu’s visit, 12 young people came to the palace of Eze Nri requesting for an appointment with the traditional ruler for Kanu. “I was the person that received them and so I told them to go and come back with a written letter so that they will get official reply from the palace since the delegation looked unusual, in that there was no titled person  among them. At this point they all left and what we saw the next day was Kanu visiting Nri community with a huge crowd of his supporters. He (Kanu) went straight to the house of one Shadrack Mbanefo, a subject to the traditional ruler of Nri. The feelers we later got, was that the said Mbanefo claimed he handed over the ‘Offo Nri’ (symbol of royalty) to Kanu, and even allowed Kanu to visit the historic ‘Ohianwehi forest’ revered as ‘Forest of Life’ by Igbo tradition. This forest is believed to be the place the first burnt offering was offered by the Jewish Igbo ancestors when they migrated from Israel more than 2,000 years ago,” he said. Onyesoh said Nri people considered Kanu’s conduct as a taboo because no high profile visitor entered the community without first visiting the traditional ruler let alone a sacred place without the knowledge of the ruler. He expressed regret that Kanu and his supporters after visiting Mbanefo returned to the entrance gate of the palace and tried to force it open. “It was this unruly conduct that made the traditional ruler to telephone the …
